When there are only minor slopes, a beginner can have as much fun cross-country skiing parks, fields, and golf courses as any expert. However, remember that unless you’re skiing a wide-groomed run, you generally ski in someone else’s tracks. You’ll find groomed cross-country runs now at almost all destination resorts - as well as many of the small gems - far
more enjoyable. Not only do these resorts rent a variety of x-country skis for different skill levels, but their ski shop staffs are also generally happy to talk to you about the proper wax to use for any given snow and weather conditions on a particular day.

Like downhill trails, the cross-country runs at resorts are excellently maintained and marked as to their type and degree of difficulty.

One of the special ski resorts for the cross-country set is Lake Placid, in New York’s Adirondacks, where America’s Olympic hopefuls in every winter sport - including cross-country skiing - train. There are five Olympic x-country training trails, ranging from easy green to ferocious black. Open to the public, the training area is quite a place to prove how skillful you may, or may not, have become since you first popped your toes into the bindings.
