You’ll never find a more amiable bunch of folks serving you than the local ranchers and cowboys who, for years, have stabled their horses and spent winters taking care of skiers here. I’ve always felt their 10-gallon hats just go naturally with the relaxed, friendly western spirit that pervades this gem.

There are only some 1,200 beds in the area. Many skiers rent condos in Jackson, 38 miles away.

Facilities for kids range from a nursery for infants to special mountain and powder classes for teenagers. The 12-and-under ski free, one child with each paying adult.

Grand Targhee is 290 miles north of Salt Lake City; 137 miles northeast of the author’s hometown, Pocatello; 87 miles from Idaho Falls; and 42 miles from Jackson. Resort shuttle service is available at airports in Idaho Falls and Jackson, children free. Reservations are required. An
express bus runs daily between Jackson and Grand Targhee. The fee includes a lift ticket.
