You may feel more glamorous with a neat ski outfit on, but you really don’t have to spend the money on one to get started. For that first trip, just dress as warmly as you would on any cold winter day. You’ll obviously need a short down or man-made fiber filled jacket, and honest ski pants. If you can’t find a pair hanging in a closet, borrow or buy.

When you decide to buy remember that styles of ski outfits for both sexes change faster than the seasons. This, of course, makes it an expensive sport for those who like to stay on the cutting edge of chic. But it’s also a great asset for those willing to buy last year’s fashions at substantial savings.

Style, however, is not what keeps you warm on a winter day. That’s due to the quality of the material used and the manner in which the garment was made.

When the urge to slip into your own ski gear becomes irresistible, and it may well do so even before your second day on the slopes, know what you’re actually getting for the amount you rack up on your credit card.

I’ve whipped up a heavy snowstorm of information about both men’s and women’s ski clothing, from long johns to the stuffing in a jacket, in Chapter 4, on keeping warm in cold weather. Read it before you buy.

Apres wear is another matter. There’s only one fiat: Casual.
